September 2003 Delaware Valley Road User: Pennsylvania's roadways are meant to be enjoyed safely by ALL vehicles, not just automobiles. That includes the growing number of bicyclists in the region. As long as cyclists ride responsibly and according to the law, they have full right to the use of roadways. PENNDOT has posted yellow "Share the Road" signs throughout the region to remind motorists and bicyclists to respect our traffic laws, and each other. We hope that the public will become more aware of the need for motor vehicles and bicyclists to use the same roads, and use them safely. PENNDOT encourages bicycle use to help relieve traffic congestion, reduce air pollution and promote good health. Sharing the road comes down to using good manners. Motorists should remember that they are required to pass at a safe distance, so don't try to squeeze past bicyclists on narrow roads! When there isn't enough space for safe passing within the lane, bicyclists should be given the use of the whole lane. It can be dangerous for bicyclists to squeeze to the far right of the lane, where they can rub against gutters, slide on sand or debris, or collide with opening doors of parked cars. So please, don't squeeze! Keep a safe distance– at least five feet– when passing a bicyclist. If you can't pass safely, please wait. Bicycle riders also need to do their part: always ride with traffic, and observe all traffic signs and signals. Also, remember that Pennsylvania law prohibits sidewalk bicycling in commercial areas. It's not just your right to use public roads– it's the law. Finally, all bicyclists should remember to wear a helmet. Statistics show that 75 percent of all people who die from bicycle crashes die from head injuries. Wearing an approved bicycle helmet can reduce your risk of head injury by up to 85 percent in the event of a crash. Remember, whether you're driving a bicycle or an automobile, it is your responsibility to Share the Road.
